Enter cups and strength — get the exact herb weight, water volume, temperature and steep time.

Great herbal tea is mostly ratio and time. This calculator turns "a pinch of this, some water" into precise, repeatable numbers you can rely on every single brew.

Whether you're making a quick solo mug or a full teapot, the tool scales everything for you — no guesswork required.

How to use it

How to use the Tea Brewing Calculator

Choose the number of cups and your preferred strength, and the calculator works out the exact grams of herb, millilitres of water, an appropriate temperature, and a sensible steeping time.

  1. Set the number of cups you want to brew.
  2. Select your preferred strength — light, balanced, or bold.
  3. Review the results: herb weight, water volume, temperature and steep time.
  4. Copy, download or print your personal recipe card.

The tool follows the ratio principles covered in our Herbal Tea Brewing Basics guide. If you want to go deeper on water temperature, our Understanding Tea Flavor Profiles guide explains how heat affects what ends up in your cup.

All calculations happen in your browser — nothing is stored on our servers.

You do not need a kitchen scale to get started — the tool also outputs teaspoon equivalents for each herb type, so you can brew accurately with whatever measuring equipment you have to hand.

FAQs — Tea Brewing Calculator

A good starting point is 1–2 teaspoons (roughly 2–3 g) of dried herb per 240 ml cup. Fluffy flowers like chamomile need a little more by volume; dense roots and barks pack more into less space. The calculator adjusts for this.

The calculator is calibrated for dried herbs. Fresh herbs hold a lot of water and are generally less concentrated, so you typically need two to three times the volume. Use the output as a starting baseline and adjust to taste.

Strength tweaks the herb-to-water ratio and steeping time together. A bold setting increases both, giving a more intense, full-bodied cup. Light dialling keeps the infusion delicate and bright.
